ERA conducted a master watershed plan for the 12.7-square mile Klein Creek watershed, encompassing Klein and Thunderbird Creeks and Mitchell Lakes. The plan addressed streambank stabilization and water quality improvements for 7,400 linear feet of restoration along the Klein Creek watershed and gained EPA approval for inclusion in DuPage County’s watershed plan addendum. ERA was successful in securing project funds, including the IEPA and DPC, securing $1 million for Section 319h and another $300,000 for WQIP and ARPA funds. The project was broken up into three sections. Section I was along Klein Creek and included streambed rehabilitation and addition of several retaining walls due to the proximity to the residential homes. Section I also included an addition of a multi-use path. Section II addressed the erosion and safety concerns from Thunderbird Trail to Illini Drive. Sections III improved the area next to Mitchell Lakes, including a creek realignment, new culvert, junction chamber for bypass flow during large storms and a multi-use path around the lake. The project included hydraulic analysis, structural design, environmental assessments, permitting and contract documents for construction.
